St. Anastasia Island

ST. ANASTASIA ISLAND

Burgas, Bulgaria

“Arrr there be treasure here”

Legend says there’s gold buried here… Somewhere…

But legend also says that God turned a pirate ship attacking the island into a lump of rock so…

This tiny volcanic island was once a convent but it gender swapped and became a monastery. So God did kinda owe them one…

The only inhabited island on the Bulgarian Black Sea coast, St. Anastasia is just 6km from Burgas harbour.

Visit the museum which explores the island’s history and houses a skeleton or two (haiii). But the highlight is the cute little church which still has old frescos on the walls dating from the 11th and 12th century. Dat old.

There’s one small restaurant and an ancient ‘healing house’ or Lekarna where you can buy herbs and sip on medicinal teas.

Like lots of teeny European islands, St. Anastasia also had a stint as a prison - hard to escape and that. You can even stay the night in a ‘cell’ at the island’s hotel (but why?)

The best way to get this island into your eyeballs is to kayak. There’s rock formations to see and sealife to play with. Dreamy.
